Barnes Flower Farm Our new farm is located in Orangevale, just on the outskirts of Sacramento. I am the main farmer but I do have to credit the hubs, he does most of the soil moving and building (thanks muscles). Our three awesome little boys help with seeding-with varying degrees of success lol! We are growing annuals, perennials, bulbs and lots of unusual Australian natives! We believe in protecting all our little critter friends and our human friends too! We are using organic practices in our beds.
Our Story In the summer of 2019 I was contemplating what I was going to do with all my soon to be free time (twins starting Kindergarten in fall). In my pre kid life I had been a landscape designer, a nursery manager and even a wholesale nursery rep. Plants are in my blood... As I walked thru my front yard I remembered how the first blooms of the daffodil made me feel the year before. I had found the bulbs sitting in the garage, forgotten about from the year before. My oldest son helped me plant those bulbs. His little 4 year old hands dropped the bulbs in the ground and I covered them up for a cozy winter. It was a really hard fall and winter in our house, really hard. When the daffodil bloomed that year, they hit different. Left in a garage, neglected, they persevered. They bloomed. They reminded me that life keeps going and it is filled with joy even in the hard times. That really made me lean into doing something with flowers, I wanted to share that feeling of resileance and joy with others. I started ordering seeds, multiple books and signed up for the Floret flower farming workshop. Starting a flower business during a pandemic was...umm...something else. I am fortunate to have wonderful neighbors and friends who needed locally grown flowers to cheer up their homes. I so appreciate every single purchase during that growing season, it motivated me to keep going with this crazy idea of being a flower farmer. Here we are years later, still working in the dirt. This year we have planted a ton of flowering trees and shrubs and perennials so stick around and see what's growing!
Slow Flowers I have learned so much about the slow flower movement and why buying local is so much better for everyone involved. Local, seasonal flowers are amazing! Locally grown means less travel for the flowers which means a smaller carbon footprint. Less travel means fresher flowers that last sooooo much longer. BONUS, your hard earned money stays in your community. It's a win win!
Local florist My flowers and unique greens are available to local florist! Send me a message with your resale license and email address to be added to the availability list. I am currently growing over 200 varieties! You can always message me for special requests too, if I don't have something I will gladly refer you to another local grower in our amazing flower community.
